Giants 6th-Rd Pick DB Corey Ballentine Injured In Shooting, Expected To Make Full Recovery

The Giants released the following statement regarding the shooting sixth-round DB Corey Ballentine was involved. 

We are aware of the tragic situation and continue to gather information. We have spoken to Corey, and he is recovering in the hospital. Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons’ family, friends and teammates and the rest of the Washburn community.


On Sunday, Washburn president Dr. Jerry Farley announced that one of their football players, Dwane Simmons, was killed in an off-campus shooting and Giants sixth-round DB Corey Ballentine was injured. 

Ballentine is, however, expected to make a full recovery. Topeka Police say that Ballentine was taken to an area hospital “with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.”

According to Tyler Greever, Simmons and Ballentine were very close.

Ballentine, 5’11/196, was taken in the sixth round of this year’s draft by the Giants. According to OverTheCap.com, he receives a four-year, $2,705,592 contract that includes a $185,592 signing bonus.

During his college career at During his final year at Washburn, Ballentine recorded 50 tackles, two forced fumbles, three interceptions, four pass defenses, and three blocked kicks.
