Jaguars Interviewing Rick Smith & Trent Baalke For GM Job

John Reid of the Florida Times-Union reports that the Jaguars have scheduled interviews with interim GM Trent Baalke and former Texans GM Rick Smith

The Jaguars are also scheduled to interview ESPN analyst Louis Riddick for their vacancy this week.

Jacksonville’s GM job could end up being among the most popular, considering that they’re in position to draft Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 overall and have multiple first-round picks this year.

Beyond that, Jaguars ownership has been patient and they should have cap space to spend in the coming years to shape their roster.

Smith took a leave of absence from Houston following the 2017 season to take care of his wife after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She passed away in 2019 and after taking more time away, Smith appears to be ready to return to football.

Smith began his NFL coaching career with the Broncos back in 1996 as their assistant defensive backs coach before he took over as their director of pro personnel in 2000.

After 11 seasons with the Broncos, Smith departed to become the general manager of the Texans. He was elevated to GM/executive VP in 2012.

During his time as the Texans’ GM, Smith led them to a record of 92-100 (48.1 percent), which included four playoff appearances over the course of 12 seasons.

Baalke, 56, began working for the Jets as a personnel scout in 1998 before joining the Redskins 2001. After four years in Washington, Baalke was hired as the 49ers’ Western region scout and worked his way up to general manager.

Baalke was named Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers Association back in 2011 after the team won 13 games. He spent six years in the position but was fired in 2017 after another disappointing season.

The Jaguars hired Baalke this past February.

During his tenure with the 49ers, the team produced a record of 57-31-1, which includes three playoff appearances and a conference title in 2012.

Weโ€™ll have more regarding Jaguars’ GM search as the news is available.
