According to Adam Schefter, Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew had X-rays this week that showed multiple fractures and a strained ligament in his right thumb.
Schefter adds Minshew has dealt with discomfort in his thumb for a couple of weeks now since the team’s game against the Texans in Week 5. He didn’t tell the team until this past week when an X-ray after the loss to the Chargers revealed the issues.
It looks like the team could turn to either backup QB Mike Glennon or sixth-round rookie Jake Luton now that Minshew is hurt. There had been some speculation that the Jaguars could bench Minshew if his play didn’t improve.
The Jaguars are on bye this week and play the Texans next Sunday in Week 9. Minshew will have until then to try and heal.
Minshew, 24, is a former sixth-round pick of the Jaguars out of Washington State back in 2019. He signed a four-year rookie deal worth $2.7 million and will make a base salary of 585,000 for the 2020 season.
In 2020, Minshew has appeared in seven games for the Jaguars and completed 65.9 percent of his passes for 1,855 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has also rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown.
