Former Redskins HC Jay Gruden appeared on the “RapSheet and Friends podcast” and said he’s hoping to get some interviews for head-coaching jobs. Otherwise, he says he could end up taking a year off.
“Hopefully I’ll get an opportunity to talk to some owners and maybe get another opportunity to be a head coach,” Gruden said, via NFL.com. “I could take a year off if I don’t get that job that I’m looking for, or if I don’t get offered one.”
“We’ll have to wait and see what’s available. Some of these jobs are not easy, the situations,” Gruden added. “You just got to make sure you’re with the right people, that’s the most important thing. Whatever the opportunity is, whether it’s a coordinator or a head coach, you got to make sure you mesh with the people that you’re working with.”
There has been a lot of speculation about Gruden joining his brother’s staff with the Raiders. However, Gruden says they currently don’t have any openings.
“He’s got a complete staff right now, so they don’t have any job openings right now,” Gruden said. “I’ll have to look at different avenues first and then if that offer comes at a later time then I’ll have to look at it.”
As for what happened with the Redskins, Gruden says he knew what was coming.
“I was kind of ready for it, to be honest with you,” Gruden said. “I knew it was going to happen.”
Gruden, 52, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers as an offensive assistant. He spent seven years in the position before departing for a job with the Florida Tuskers.
Gruden returned to the NFL as the Bengals offensive coordinator in 2011 before he was hired as the Redskins coach for the 2014 season. Washington fired him in October.
During his five years in Washington, Gruden led them to a record of 35-49-1, which includes one playoff appearance back in 2015.
