New York also signed DL Tanzel Smart and K/P Sergio Castillo to the practice squad, releasing WR Donte Moncrief in a corresponding move.
Mims had been on injured reserve dealing with a hamstring injury that dates back to almost the start of training camp, so it’s a major step for New York to start seeing what they have in the rookie.
This opens a 21-day window for the three to practice with the team before the Jets have to make a decision on adding them to the active roster.
Mims, 22, was a four-year starter at Baylor and led the team in receiving in 2019. The Jets used the No. 59 overall pick in the second round on him.
Mims projected to sign a four-year, $5,433,700 rookie contract that includes a $1,511,782 signing bonus.
During his four-year college career at Baylor, Mims had 186 receptions for 2,925 yards (15.7 YPC) and 28 touchdowns.
