Jets WR Stephen Hill No Longer Guaranteed A Roster Spot?

Rich Cimini of ESPN.com started his Jets’ roster rankings on Tuesday and offered an interesting note regarding former second-round pick WR Stephen Hill.

According to Cimini, Hill’s roster spot no longer guaranteed as his “scholarship is over.”

The Jets used the No. 43 overall pick on him back in 2012, but since then he hasn’t come anywhere close to living up to the hype that made him a fast rising prospect following a great showing at the NFL Combine.

In two years in the NFL, Hill has totaled 45 receptions for 594 and four touchdowns over the course of 23 games. Both of seasons have ended with him being placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Hill was drafted by Mike Tannenbaum, which means there is no guarantee that John Idzik is going to give him the benefit of the doubt should his struggles continue.

Hill is still just 22-years-old and Jets clearly need some help at the receiver position, so I’m sure they continue to have high hopes for him next year, but he’ll definitely have to show more than what we’ve seen up to this point.

Other Jets Notes:

  • According to Cimini, QB Mark Sanchez is likely done with the Jets, but expects him to find interest as a free agent.
  • Jets K Nick Folk is reportedly seeking a long-term, which could lead to him testing the open market.
  • Cimini writes that “barring a significant acquisition” Antonio Allen will likely a starter next season.
