Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones revealed the team and QB Dak Prescott have not had negotiations since September before the season started, per Michael Gelhken.
Jones added the two sides have not had any talks yet this offseason. They may meet at the Combine, but nothing is firmly scheduled as of now.
Jones said Dallas will wait until the CBA rules for 2020 are agreed to before agreeing to any deals. Despite the continued impasse, Jones told Gehlken the team is “absolutely not” moving in a different direction from Prescott.
“Dakโs our quarterback. Heโs our quarterback for the future. We have nothing but the greatest respect for him. …Thereโs no thoughts like that.โ
Dallas faces a looming deadline to use the franchise tag on March 10 for Prescott and previously said that was the target date for a new deal. Jones says the team will negotiate with Prescott right up until the deadline before using the tag, per Clarence Hill.
Complicating matters is the free-agent status for WR Amari Cooper, who is also set to hit the open market. While both the franchise tag and transition tag are in play because a new CBA has not yet been agreed to, that could change by mid-March.
That has the potential to leave the Cowboys in a situation where they have to allow Cooper to hit the open market, as Prescott would be the first priority with the franchise tag.
Jones mentioned the Cowboys had a “very upbeat” conversation with Cooper and his agent at the Super Bowl, for what it’s worth, according to Gehlken.
Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and is in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2019, Prescott appeared in all 16 games and completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has also rushed for 277 yards and three touchdowns for Dallas. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 10 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
