Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell plainly stated that he does not foresee any interest in Ray Rice from the Lions, via ESPN.com.
“I don’t foresee that, to be plain and simple,” Caldwell said regarding Rice during Wednesday’s NFL meetings. ย “There has to be a need and a fit in all areas. ย At this point in time, he’s not a fit for us.”
The Lions released Reggie Bush earlier this off-season, but RB Joique Bell has proven he can carry the load, and RB Theo Riddick has flashed as a third-down type.
Still, some speculated that Caldwell’s connections to Rice could make Detroit a landing spot.
Rice, 28, last appeared in an NFL game back in 2013 when he ran for 660 yards on 214 carries (3.1 YPC) to go along with 58 receptions for 321 yards receiving and four total touchdowns.
It’s worth mentioning that Rice dealt with a hip injury that year, which could explain his dip in production.
However, Pro Football Focus had him rated as the worst qualifying running back in the league that year.
