Lions GM Martin Mayhew announced Friday that they will pick up LT Riley Reiff‘s fifth-year option before the May 3 deadline, per Kyle Meinke.
Mayhew added thatย he’s very comfortable with Reiff playingย left tackle for them moving forward and considers him to beย a very good player, per Tim Twentyman.
This move will cost the Lionsย $8.07 million for the 2016 season. However, it’s guaranteed for injury only and won’t prevent the team from working out a long-term contract extension with Reiff.
Reiff, 26, has one year remaining on hisย four-year, $7,993,700 rookie contractย that includedย $6,513,650 guaranteed, He stands to make a base salary of $1,155,050 for the 2015 season.
In 2014, Reiff appeared in 15 games for the Lions and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 23 offensive tackleย out of 84 qualifying players.
