Futures deals are essentially camp invites that will give players the opportunity to compete for roster spots during offseason workouts and training camp.
Howard, 24, wound up signing on with the Cardinals last year as an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State. He lasted just a few months in Arizona before he was waived with an injury settlement at the start of the season.
Howard had a brief stint with the Giants before eventually signing a futures contract with the Patriots this past January. Since then, he played for a few teams including the Ravens, Eagles and Browns before signing on to the Lions’ practice squad last week.
During his college career at App. State, Howard recorded 220 tackles, a half sack, three interceptions, a fumble recovery, three forced fumbles, a defensive touchdown and 14 pass defenses over the course of four seasons and 52 games.
