Lions Sign 9 Players Futures Deals Including RB Mike James

The Detroit Lions announced that they’ve signed nine players to reserve/future contracts on Monday. The list includes:

  1. WR Jared Abbrederis
  2. TE Kennard Backman
  3. RB Mike JamesĀ 
  4. TE Khari Lee
  5. LB Steve Longa
  6. OL Matt Rotheram
  7. OL Brandon Thomas
  8. WR Andrew Turzilli
  9. DB Charles Washington

Future/reserve contracts are essentially an opportunity for players compete for a roster spot in offseason workouts and during training camp.

James, 25, is a former sixth-round pick by the Buccaneers back in 2013.Ā HeĀ was waived a few weeks into the seasonĀ but was later signed to their practice squad after clearing waivers.

Tampa Bay elected to waive James with an injury designation last week with an injury designation. After clearing waivers, James reverted to the Bucs’ injured reserve list.Ā The Buccaneers waived him from I.R. withĀ injury settlement a few weeks into the season.

James signed on to the Lions’ practice squadĀ earlier in the month only to be cut loose a few weeks ago. The Buccaneers brought him back for a brief stint in November.

In 2016, James has appeared in four games and ran for 19 yards on four carries to go along with four receptions for 22 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
