Montreal Alouettes GM Kavis Reed admitted that he’s reached out to the agent for free agent QB Colin Kaepernick after they placed him on their negotiation list about a month ago. However, nothing is considered imminent at this point in time.
“He’s in the midst of some very important things,” Reed said, via the Montreal Gazette. “We understand there’s a movement going on around him. We’re doing our due diligence and making certain they know we want to see where he’s at. It’s a matter of kicking the tires at this stage.
“To me, he’s a very good player. Take all the movement stuff aside. He’s a young man that we feel has a very good football IQ. He has taken a team to a championship level. The talent’s there. As a GM, you have to look at the talent. It’s incumbent on us to explore it.”
Kaepernick recently told Shaun King of the New York Daily News. that he’s ready to play right now and has never stopped wanting to play football.
“Yes. I’ve never stopped,” Kaepernick said when asked if he wants to keep playing football. “I’m ready right now. Working out daily.”
There hasn’t been any reported interest from NFL teams in Kaepernick since the Ravens were mulling the idea while Joe Flacco was hurt during the preseason and training camp.
Kaepernick, 29, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed when reached an agreement with the 49ers on a restructured deal.
Kaepernick visited with the Seahawks a few months ago but left Seattle without an agreement.
In 2016, Kaepernick has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, while adding 468 yards rushing. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
