Mutual Interest Between Cardinals & Mike McCarthy?

Peter King hears from sources that Mike McCarthy likes Arizona and would be interested in exploring the job, assuming they part ways with Steve Wilks.

According to King, the Cardinals are also interested McCarthy, so this could be something worth monitoring in the coming weeks.

On Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Cardinals are not expected to retain Wilks and one source he spoke with told him he could not envision a scenario in which the Cardinals would bring back Wilks, despite hiring him back in January.

McCarthy figures to be one of the top coaching candidates this year and has been linked to other jobs including the Browns and Jets.

Schefter also reported that McCarthy is already receiving overtures from NFL teams considering head coaching changes. However, Schefter says it remains to be seen whether McCarthy will immediately return to coaching for the 2019 season, given that he still has a year remaining on his contract with the Packers.

Schefter added that some Packers assistant coaches thought last year that McCarthy might land in Arizona with the Cardinals’ vacant job.

McCarthy, 55, began his NFL coaching career with the Chiefs back in 1993 as an offensive quality control coordinator. He bounced around with the Packers, Saints and 49ers before the Packers hired him as their head coach in 2006.

The Packers made the decision to move on from McCarthy following their disappointing loss to the Cardinals.

During his 13-year tenure in Green Bay, McCarthy has led the Packers to a record of 125-77-2 (61.8 percent), which includes nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title in 2010.

We’ll have more regarding McCarthy as the news is available.
