NFC Notes: Giants, Packers, Redskins

Giants

  • Giants new HC Pat Shurmur told reporters on Friday that he believes QB Eli Manning has “years left” in him: “I think he’s got years left. How much? I don’t know. … He’s an outstanding player.” (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Shurmur confirmed that he plans to call plays for the Giants in 2018.
  • Shurmur referred to new DC James Bettcher as “a rising star in this business.” (Art Stapleton)
  • According to Shurmur, he and GM Dave Gettleman clicked during the interview process as soon as Gettleman told him “It starts with the offensive line.” (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Regarding WR Odell Beckham Jr, Shurmur said: “I need to get to know him. I need to get to know what makes him tick, and I need to talk to him about what we’re looking for from a guy who plays from the NY Giants.” (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Shurmur said that this is a “clean slate deal” when asked about Beckham’s behavior. (Dan Duggan)
  • Shurmur on QB Davis Webb“We thought he was a tremendous player. We thought he was a guy … who had a chance to be a starter someday.” (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Giants owner John Mara said of a possible extension for Beckham Jr: “We’ll get something done at the appropriate time.” (Art Stapleton)

Packers

Packers CB Kevin King finished out his rookie season on injured reserve and underwent left shoulder surgery.

However, GM Brian Gutekunst says they have no long-term concerns about King‘s future, despite the shoulder issues he’s dealt with dating back to college.

“I wouldn’t think so,” Gutekunst said, via Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “It sounds like everything is going good. You never like to see that with young players, but yeah, I don’t think so.

“These are young, healthy, high-level athletes. So I think hopefully — knock on wood — everything should be good there.”

Redskins

  • Rich Tandler of CSN Washington writes that the Redskins could once again show interest in DT Bennie Logan, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
  • The Redskins targeted Logan last year before he ultimately agreed to a one-year contract with the Chiefs.
  • If the Redskins look to the draft to address the defensive tackle position, Tandler mentions Washington’s Vita Vea as a prospect that could be intriguing for Washington in the first round.
  • Tandler considers left guard to be an area of need for the Redskins, as they don’t want to bring back Spencer Long and Shawn Lauvao is “almost certainly not going to be back.”
