NFL Notes: 49ers, Bears, Dolphins, Jets, Titans

49ers

49ers HC Kyle Shanahanย said Wednesday during an appearance on KNBR that they need QB Brian Hoyer to “step up” and regain his confidence.

โ€œI want him to get hisย edge back. I want him to get his confidence,โ€ Shanahan said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. โ€œWe need Brian to step up, and we need everyone around him to step up.โ€

Bears

  • Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports writes that the Bears could make a quarterback change and elevate rookie Mitch Trubisky to starter after their Week 4 matchup against the Packers.
  • La Canfora points out that the Bears will be coming off of a short week and will have an extended break ahead of them, which should give them plenty of time to get Trubisky ready in time for Week 5’s game against the Vikings.

Dolphins

  • Jason La Canforaย could see a scenario where Jay Cutler returns to the Dolphins on a two- or three-year deal after this season, depending on injuries and Cutler’s desire to keep playing in 2018.

Jets

Dolphins QB Jay Cutler told reporters on Wednesday that he and the Jets were “feeling each other out” during the offseason.

“We were feeling each other out,” Cutler said, via Connor Hughes of NJ.com. “It wasn’t aggressive. Wasn’t super vague. We were feeling each other out. It didn’t work out.”

Cutler spoke highly of Jets QB Josh McCown as a player and as a teammate.

I love the guy,” Cutler said of McCown. “We could sit here for an hour and I’d tell you all the great things about him. He’s a heck of a competitor. Unbelievable guy in the locker room. Unbelievable guy in the meeting room. Selfless.

“He’s one of those guys that you come across and you’re happy you had him as a teammate. He’s one of a kind.

Titans

  • The Titans officially ruled out rookie WR Corey Davis (hamstring) for their Week 3 game against the Seahawks.
