NFL Notes: 49ers, Colts, Cowboys, Giants

49ers

  • On Wednesday, 49ers GM John Lynch told the NFL Network that they’re “working hard” to get a long-term extension in place with QB Jimmy Garoppolo. (NFLTR)
  • Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes that Garoppolo and his agent, Don Yee, should wait until the 49ers use their franchise tag on him, it would set Garoppolo’s value at $23 million per year and count towards the three tag limit.
  • According to Florio, some believe the 49ers will have no choice but to use the exclusive tag, as there could be teams out there willing to part with two first-round picks to sign Garoppolo away from San Francisco.
  • If the 49ers use the exclusive tag on Garoppolo, Florio points out that the 49ers would have to pay him $24.88 million in 2018 and Garoppolo and Yee could then use a second ($29.86 million) and third tag ($43 million) to justify a contract that would pay out $97.7 million over the first three years.
  • Should the 49ers base the three-year tag figures off of the non-exclusive tag, Florio mentions that it would come out to a three-year payout of $90.3 million.
  • We have Garoppolo featured in our Top 100 – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.

Colts

  • Tony Pauline reports that the Colts are hoping to come out of this offseason with as many as three new linebackers and several cornerbacks.
  • Pauline says that the word going around the Senior Bowl is that Indy would be willing to trade out of the No. 3 spot to accumulate more draft picks.

Cowboys

  • Sources have told Tony Pauline that the Cowboys will be looking for linebackers and a pass rusher in the offseason.
  • One prospect to watch for Dallas, according to Pauline, is Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, who could blow up at the Combine.

Giants

  • Dan Duggan reports that former Cardinals assistant special teams coach Anthony Blevins has agreed to take the same position with the Giants.
  • Alex Marvez reports that the Giants are hiring Lou Anarumo as their defensive backs coach, Bill McGovern as their linebackers coach and Gary Emanuel as their defensive line coach.
  • According to Tony Pauline, new Giants GM Dave Gettleman will attempt to sign Panthers free agent G Andrew Norwell in the coming months, as opposed to trying to re-sign C Weston Richburg.
  • We have both Norwell and Richburg featured in our Top 100 – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
