NFL Notes: Aldon Smith, Quarterbacks, Colts, & Giants

Aldon Smith

Jason Cole of B/R reports that Aldon Smith‘s decision to sign with the Raiders was impacted by his preference to remain in the Bay Area and close to his support network.

A source tells Cole that Smith won’t face charges from his most recent off-the-field issue. Even so, Cole expects the NFL to hand down some sort of punishment, but it remains to be seen what kind of discipline he’ll receive.

Cole believe Smith could prove to be a building block long-term for the Raiders if he can stay out of trouble moving foward.

Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie said of the Smith signing: “We are confident that the Raiders provide an environment where Aldon can thrive through the support, structure and leadership within the building. We are excited to have Aldon here in Raiders family.”

Quarterbacks

Albert Breer asked NFL executives from around the league who will be the top 5 quarterbacks by the end of the 2015 season.

Colts

• Colts RB Vick Ballard (hamstring) and CB Greg Toler (neck) have been ruled out for Week 1.

Giants

• The Giants announced that WR Victor Cruz and LB Jon Beason are out for Week 1’s game against the Cowboys.
