NFL Notes: Ray Rice, Eagles, Lions & Texans

Ray Rice

Free agent RB Ray Rice told Outside The Lines in an interview Tuesday he understands the issues that would come from signing him to a contract, but he still believes he’s a changed man.

Rice confirmed that he has spoken to prospective teams about the situation, and on multiple occasions has wanted to “hang them up the right way” even though he recognizes that it’s a “privilege” to play pro sports.

“The conversations that I had with them is more to understand the magnitude of my situation,” Rice said. “I know that it’s a unique deal, so I just try to honestly live day to day and stay hopeful for that opportunity.

“I understand why maybe a few teams or teams shy away from me,” Rice said. “I understand that because it’s a privilege. It truly is a privilege to play in the NFL. It’s a privilege to play professional sports.”

Rice is still hopeful that he’ll eventually get another opportunity in the NFL, but the situation has been a “nightmare” for him.

“I always preach one or two bad decisions, and your dream could become a nightmare,” Rice said. “Well, I had to eat my own words. I truly lived a nightmare. There is no set in stone whether you’re going to get a second chance or not. I have to set my hope and faith and everything else that I’m doing in my life, I’m just really hopeful for a second chance.

Eagles

Lions

GM Martin Mayhew said that the Lions are currently in extension negotiations with LB DeAndre Levy and DT Haloti Ngata.

We’re in discussions with DeAndre at this time,” Mayhew said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “That’s about all I’ll say about it.”

Mayhew has also been impressed with Ngata’s background, and views him as an impact player along the defensive line.

I’ve seen a lot from him,” Mayhew said. “Watching him play, he’s a phenomenal player. He can be an impact player for us as well on the defensive line. I don’t need to see a whole lot more. It’d be great if he was practicing right now. He’s got an injury he’s dealing with. I don’t have a timetable for that, but it’s nothing serious. But I’ve seen enough to know that I want to have him around.”
