NFL Notes: Rule Changes, Bears, Cowboys, Saints, & Steelers

Rule Changes

  • The NFL passed rule an eligible receiver who reports as ineligible must line up in tackle box.
  • Linebackers will now be allowed to wear numbers 40-49.
  • The NFL could make extra point attempts live plays, which would allow the defense to score. There was also talk that they could move the ball to the 1.5 yard line for two point conversions.

Bears

  • Ian Rapoport reports that the Bears did meet with QB Jay Cutler earlier in the offseason, but they never talked about restructuring his contract.
  • Instead, the Bears reportedly left convinced that Cutler was their starting quarterback, per Rapoport.

Cowboys

  • Commissioner Roger Goodell said that he expects the league to make a decision regarding potential discipline for Cowboys DE Greg Hardy at some point in the “near future.

Saints

  • HC Sean Payton said that they play to move David Hawthorne to middle linebacker to replace Curtis Lofton, who was released. (Larry Holder)

Steelers

  • The Steelers will receive a sixth-round compensatory pick instead of the seventh-round they were initially expected to receive. (Mark Kaboly)

  1. “Linebackers will now be allowed to wear numbers 40-49” That’s really stupid IMO. Once the final team rosters are announced LB’s should wear 50-59, if all are taken then 90-99. WR’s shouldn’t wear 1-19, unless 80-89 are taken. It’s the NFL not college. 40-49 are RB & DB’s and TE if 80-89 are already in use.
    QB, K & P’s 1-19. C & G 60-69, 50-59 IF 60-69 are already in use. OT 70-79. DL 90-99. If it’s pre-season or what have you, then it doesn’t matter until the final roster is announced. And the regular season starts.
