It seems that ESPN’s Mel Kiper is fueling the rumor mill today. In this morning media conference call, Kiper has already discussed Cam Newton‘s options as well as what the Miami Dolphins quarterback situation. Kiper also tackled the topic of what team Kevin Kolb could find himself playing for come next season, via Philadelphiaeagles.com.
Arizona Cardinals
As Kiper points out the Arizona Cardinals are a team that should be considered one of the top suitors for Kolb. Arizona that elected to go with a cheap veteran quarterback and a group of rookies last season only to have this strategy blow up in their face.
“You think about Kolb as the guy that Arizona seems to have the most interest because they went with the young quarterbacks (Max Hall and John Skelton) last year,” Kiper said. “To get another young quarterback, I don’t think it’s an option for (Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt) and company. Kolb would make the most sense there.”
As for Kevin Kolb, Kiper see the idea as a benefit for him as well.
“For Kolb, I think Arizona would be the best fit, just for trying to get back to that more of a guy who’s established. I think that would be a good destination for Kevin Kolb.”
Kiper was also asked if he thought that Kolb has more value than some of this years rookie quarterbacks.
“That’s a difficult question,” Kiper said. “His grade coming out was not going to be as high as what Gabbert’s and Newton’s are right now. We know Kolb can get it done in the NFL at least at a decent level. Can he be an excellent quarterback? Nobody knows. A.J. Feeley was another quarterback who was in Philadelphia, moved on with not much success. That’s always risky. You never know. Now, Matt Schaub moved on from Atlanta to Houston with very good success.”
Kiper also mentionedย Cincinnati, San Francisco, Tennessee and Washington as other teams that could be considering Kolb.
No real surprise there. Several teams will consider Kolb but a trade isย contingentย upon the NFL and NFLPA getting a new CBA in place. If deal gets done in the next few days, momentum could pick up quickly which could have serious implications on the upcoming draft. Philadelphia will be sticking with their high asking price so any team willing to trade for Kolb will have to ok will giving up some real value in return for him.
