Sports Illustrated’s Peter King writes that theย Nnamdi Asomugha willย undoubtedlyย be the most coveted free agent on the market once the offseason finally begins. No real surprise there but King mentions a few teams that haven’t surfaced in previous rumors.ย King lists theย Kansas City Chiefs andย Tampa Bay Buccaneers as two teams that will have money to spend on free agents.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay has young star inย Aqib Talib and they’ve already re-signed Ronde Barber for the upcoming. GMย Mark Dominik has a history of shying away from big name free agents and sticking to theย strategyย of drafting and developing young players. The Buc’s will have the money to be players in the Asomugha sweepstakes but it would still be surprising to see them get involved.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs will have some money to spend to but needs at wide-receiver, linebacker and defensive line will be higher on their priority list than adding a big money free agent that happens to play a position that already have some talent at. Kansas City has one of the best young cornerback tandems in Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr. The Chiefs have place a first-round tender on Carr will be a restricted free agent once free agency begins so the intend on having come next season.
Every team could use depth at cornerback but signing Asmougha makes more sense for teams that have glaring needs like the Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans and the Detroit Lions have than it does for teams that already have young talent at the position. King was just suggesting what he would do if he was in their positions but it will still be surprising to see Tampa Bay and Kansas City get involved in a huge bidding war.
