Colin Kaepernick Would Play For Redskins If They’re Willing To Sign Him

Update:

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that if the Redskins were interested in signing QB Colin Kaepernick to a contract, he’s ready and willing to play for the franchise.

Sources tell Robinson that Kaepernick is willing to play for any NFL team, despite criticism of the team’s logo and name, as well as owner Dan Synder being critical of players kneeling during the anthem.

He’s a professional Super Bowl caliber quarterback and in the best shape of his life and he would play if given the opportunity on any NFL team,” Robinson’s source said when asked if Kaepernick would be willing to play for the Redskins as early as next week.

According to Robinson, Kaepernick is still working out and has maintained a conditioning and throwing regimen to be prepared if a team were to call him.

Washington started Mark Sanchez in Week 14 only to bench him in favor of Josh Johnson. Redskins HC Jay Gruden announced that they will start Johnson next week.

Reports from earlier in the day mentioned that the Redskins never contacted Kaepernick about a tryout, even though Gruden said it was discussed last week.

“No call for a job, no call for a tryout, no calls period – nothing,” one source said.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that no teams have reached out to free agent QB Colin Kaepernick this season to gauge his interest in a potential workout, even though multiple teams have sustained injuries at quarterback this year.

Last week, Redskins HC Jay Gruden told reporters that they “talked about and discussed” signing Kaepernick. However, Schefter says that no one from the Redskins ever reached to him.

Gruden explained that based on where they are in the season, it made sense for them to sign someone with more familiarity with their system, but acknowledged that there would have been “a greater possibility” of considering Kaepernick if it was earlier in the season.

“There’s not a lot of time to get a brand new quarterback and system installed in a couple of days,” Gruden said. “He’s been talked about, but we’ll probably go in a different direction.”

Recent reports have said that Kaepernick is still working out regularly and hoping to get another shot in the NFL.

It’s worth mentioning that Kaepernick has a pending collusion lawsuit against the NFL.

Kaepernick, 31, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed when reached an agreement with the 49ers on a restructured deal that allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent in 2016.

The Seahawks showed interest in bringing Kaepernick in for a visit this offseason before canceling the meeting altogether.

In 2016, Kaepernick completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, while adding 468 yards rushing. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
