This opens a three-week window of time for the Panthers to activate him from injured reserve and add him to their 53-man roster.
The expectation is that McCaffrey will be held out of Week 8’s game against the Falcons this Thursday, but he could be back soon after.
McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain last month.
McCaffrey, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Panthers back in 2017. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $17.224 million contract when the Panthers signed him to a new four-year, $64 million contract extension that also included his expected fifth-year option.
In 2020, McCaffrey has appeared in two games for the Panthers and rushed 41 times for 156 yards (3.8 YPC) and four touchdowns, adding seven receptions for 67 yards.
