Ian Rapoport of NFL.comย writes that theย Patriots could target a “big receiver on the outside” during free agency now that they’ve freed up some extra cap room by restructuring Tom Brady‘s contract.
Rapoportย specifically mentions that wide receiversย Dwayne Boweย andย Mike Wallace could both be in consideration.ย Rapoport adds thatย Bill Belichick has offered consistent praise forย Wallace in the past.
Bowe is a candidate for the Chiefs franchise tag, so there’s no guarantee he would be available. Wallace figures to command a huge contract on the open market, so it’s hard to imagine that New England would be able to meet his contract requirements and still retain free agents like Wes Welker, Sebastian Vollmer and Aqib Talib.
There’s also talk that Brandon Lloyd isn’t going to be back next season, so it will be interesting to see what they elect to do at the receiver position in the next few weeks.
We have Wallace listed as the No. 4 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents List.
