Patriots Signing TE Kennard Backman To Practice Squad, Waiving TE Austin Traylor

The New England Patriots announced that they signed TE Kennard Backman to their practice squad and are waiving TE Austin Traylor to make room for him.

The Patriots’ practice squad now consists of:

  1. G Chris Barker
  2. WR Devin Lucien
  3. WR DeAndrew White
  4. WR Shaq Evans
  5. G Jamil Douglas
  6. S Shamiel Gary
  7. G Chase Farris
  8. TE Kennard Backman
  9. LB Trevor Bates
  10. RB Tyler Gaffney

The Patriots brought Backman in for a workout on Friday, so they apparently were impressed enough to sign him.

Backman, 23, was originally drafted by the Packers in the sixth round of last year’s draft out of UAB. He managed to make the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason, but he was waived with an injury designation as Green Bay cut their roster down to 75 players.

After clearing waivers, Backman was added to the Packers’ practice squad but was unfortunately waived back in September.

Since becoming a free agent, Backman tried out for the Lions and Ravens but was not offered a contract from either team.

In 2015, Backman appeared in seven games for the Packers, but did not record a single reception.
