Raiders Waive Former Second-Round S Obi Melifonwu With Injury Designation

The Oakland Raiders announced Thursday that they’ve placed former second-round S Obi Melifonwu on waivers with an injury designation and officially signed veteran CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Raiders never felt Melifonwu loved football enough.

Should Melifonwu clear waivers tomorrow, he would revert to the Raiders’ injured serve list.

Melifonwu, 24, was selected by the Raiders with the No. 56 overall pick. He’s in the second year of his four-year, $4.5 million contract and set to make base salaries of $669,972 and $824,944 over the next two years.

The Raiders placed Melifonwu on injured reserve coming out of the preseason last year while he was working his way back from knee surgery and later brought him back. However, he returned to the injured reserve in December.

In 2017, Melifonwu appeared in five games for the Raiders and recorded seven tackles and no interceptions or pass defenses.

During his four-year college career at Connecticut, Melifonwu recorded 349 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 16 pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumble.
