According to Dan Graziano, the Redskins have fired HC Jay Gruden following an 0-5 start to the season.
The team released the following statement: Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility. Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond.
Redskins OL coach Bill Callahan will take over as the interim head coach for the rest of the season, per Ian Rapoport.
This move has been brewing for some time as Washington has had a rough start to the 2019 season. There have also been numerous reports of disconnect between the front office and coaching staff, including a report that Gruden was not on board with the selection of QB Dwayne Haskins in the first round.
Many around the league believe Gruden will eventually join his brother Jon’s staff with the Raiders and sources close to Jay Gruden tell La Canfora that they think a stint in a lower-profile role with the Raiders would suit him perfectly.
Gruden, 52, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers as an offensive assistant. He spent seven years in the position before departing for a job with the Florida Tuskers.
Gruden returned to the NFL as the Bengals offensive coordinator in 2011 before he was hired as the Redskins coach for the 2014 season.
During his five years in Washington, Gruden led them to a record of 35-49-1, which includes one playoff appearance back in 2015.
