Report: Lovie Smith Is The First To Interview For Texans HC Job

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans have interviewed former Bears HC Lovie Smith for their vacant head coaching position.

  • McClain adds that Houston also has interest in  Penn State’s Bill O’Brien and Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt.
  • Houston will give interim HC Wade Phillips an interview as well, according to McClain.

Smith has been a popular name connected to the Texans job since Gary Kubiak was fired.

Houston has been running Phillips’ 3-4 defense for a few years now, so a change to Smith’s Tampa-Two defensive scheme could be coming. It’s worth noting that Smith is a Texas native and has maintained since he was fired last year that he intends to return to coaching in the NFL.

Smith’s head coaching record with the Chicago Bears was 81-63 over the course of nine seasons.

Other names connected to the Texans’ job include: Broncos DC Jack Del Rio, Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell, Auburn HC Gus Malzahn and possibly Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin.
