Report: Patriots Expected To Hire Greg Schiano As Defensive Coordinator

Update:

Bruce Feldman has been told that Greg Schiano hasn’t decided whether he’s leaving Ohio State yet for a position with the Patriots and it’s still possible New England could promote Brian Flores to defensive coordinator.

Even so, the Patriots could still add Schiano in some capacity, but HC Bill Belichick reportedly still has yet to make an official determination.

Zach Barnett of Football Scoop is reporting that Ohio State DC Greg Schiano is expected to become the defensive coordinator the Patriots.

Last week,ย Gary Tanguay reported that the Patriots were expected to interview Schiano for their defensive coordinator position once Matt Patricia is officially hired as the Lions’ next head coach, so this doesn’t come as a complete surprise.

There was talk that the Patriots were likely toย promoteย LBs coach Brian Flores to defensive coordinator after he wasn’t hired by the Cardinals as their next head coach. However, it appears as though Bill Belichick feels better about bringing in Schiano to take over the team’s defense.

Schiano, 51, began his college coaching career back in 1989 as a graduate assistant for Rutgers. Since then, Schiano worked at Penn State, Miami and for the Chicago Bears before he was hired as the Buccaneers head coach in 2012.

Schiano lasted two seasons in Tampa Bay before he was fired by the Buccaneers. After a few years out of college, Schiano was hired to run Ohio State’s defense last year.

A few months ago, Schiano actually agreed to a deal to become the next head coach at Tennessee before the school backed out of the deal, due to backlash they received from the move.

During his 11 years as Rutgers head coach, Schiano posted a record of 68-67 (50.4 percent) to go along with six bowl game appearances.

We’ll have more regarding the Patriots’ defensive coordinator job as the news is available.
