Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that there noticeable buzz in league circles that current Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill, who is expected to be released this offseason, could possibly end up with the Jaguars as their backup quarterback.
The Jaguars are still expected to sign Nick Foles in free agency, but Tannehill could provide them some depth at the position and possibly compete for the starting job if signed, writes Florio.
According to Dan Graziano, Tannehill could surface as a potential backup option for the Jets once cut by the Dolphins, given that he has ties to HC Adam Gase and they could be looking to move on from Josh McCown.
Last we heard regarding Tannehill, Ian Rapoport reported that the Dolphins have had trade talks involving Tannehill, but this is typically a precursor for a team to release a player and Tannehill’s salary would be difficult to trade.
Reports have said for months now that the Dolphins are prepared to move on from Tannehill, so this isn’t much of a surprise.
Tannehill, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2012. He’s currently in the third year of his six-year, $95.272 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $17.47 million and $18.725 million over the next two years of the agreement.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Tannehill would free up $13,188,332 of available cap space while creating $13,423,334 in dead money. However, if Miami were to designate Tannehill has a post-June 1 release, they could improve those figures to $18.75 million of cap room and $7,861,666 of dead money.
In 2018, Tannehill has appeared in 10 games for the Dolphins and thrown for 1,832 yards while completing 65 percent of his passes to go along with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
We’ll have more regarding Tannehill and the Dolphins as the news is available.
