Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that Jets QB Sam Darnold (mono) still has hurdles to clear in order to play in Week 5.
Darnold has more tests scheduled for Monday on his spleen and if it’s determined that it’s not as enlarged, he can begin practicing and working out.
Mortensen says that Darnold’s cardio has been limited to walking and stationary bike in recent weeks and he’s “not a lock but hopeful” to return to the team.
Darnold previously made it clear that Week 5 was his target date to return.
“The goal is to be back Week 5 against Philly,” Darnold said, per Andy Vasquez. “...I know we’ve got our work cut out for us, but if we can go on a little run anything is possible.”
Darnold mentioned that he’s feeling better and has only lost a few pounds since being diagnosed with mono.
Darnold, 22, was taken with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Jets. He agreed to a four-year, $30,370,490 contract with the Jets that includes a $20,167,628 signing bonus.
The contract will also include a fifth-year option for the Jets to pick up in 2021.
In 2018, Darnold appeared in 13 games for the Jets and completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 2.865 yards to go along with 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown.
We’ll have more regarding Darnold as the news is available.
