Seahawks Place S Kam Chancellor On Reserve/PUP List, Officially Ends His 2018 Season

The Seattle Seahawks announced that they’ve placed S Kam Chancellor on the reserve/PUP list, which officially ends his 2018 season.

A few weeks ago, Chancellor mentioned via his Twitter account that his NFL career is likely over.

  • Ian Rapoport later reported that Chancellor isn’t officially retiring, he just wasn’t cleared medically to play again.
  • Tom Pelissero added Chancellor’s recent scans didn’t show the progress he had hoped for and he doesn’t think he’ll be medically cleared to play. Pelissero adds that Chancellor hasn’t officially retired.

It actually matters whether Chancellor retires from the NFL, given that he has $6.2 million in 2018 and $5.2 million of his base salary next year is now guaranteed.

Chancellor sustained a serious neck injury last year that led to him being placed on injured reserve and seeking multiple medical opinions.

Indications have been that it was unlikely he was going to get medical clearance, but Chancellor maintained that he was still planning to be back for the 2018 season as recently as May.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the test results didn’t come back as he was hoping and he now feels as though it’s best to move on.

Chancellor, 30, is a former fifth-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2010. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $43.13 million contract that included $25 million and is set to make base salaries of $6.8 million and $10 million over the first two years of the agreement.

For his career, Chancellor recorded 434 tackles, two sacks, 12 interceptions, 50 pass defenses, nine forced fumbles, three recoveries and a safety over the course of eight seasons and 109 games played. He was a four-time Pro Bowler.
