Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that Seahawks S Kam Chancellor was under the impression that the team would rework his contract after he established himself as one of the top safeties in the game.
Chancellor reportedly agreed to his current contract, which offered less total money, but included more security. The move ultimately helped Seattle address other core players on the teamโs roster.
According to Florio, Chancellor expects the Seahawks to restructure his contract so that itโs more in line with the five-year, $44.725 million deal signed by his teammate Earl Thomas.
While this may be Chancellorโs hope, Florio mentions that this doesnโt mean the Seahawks will acquiesce to his demands now that theyโve handed out big-money contracts to QB Russell Wilson and MLB Bobby Wagner.
Chancellor, 27, still has another three years remaining on his five-year, $29.323 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $4.55 million (2015), $5.1 million (2016), and $6.8 million (2017).
In 2014, Chancellor appeared in 14 games and recorded 78 tackles, one interceptions, a forced fumble and six pass defenses for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 safety out of 87 qualifying players.
Weโll have more regarding Chancellor and his holdout as the news is available.
