Seahawks Still Interested In Bringing Richard Sherman Back

Richard Sherman tells Albert Breer that the Seahawks were to looking to gain some financial flexibility heading into free agency, but they’re still interested in re-signing him this offseason.

“They wanted the financial flexibility going into free agency but expressed that they wanted me to return and will be in contact,” Sherman tells Breer.

Sherman told Josina Anderson something similar.

They are gonna let me explore free agency with the hope that I can return,” Sherman said. “They just wanted the financial flexibility.”

Here’s what Sherman told Tom Pelissero regarding what he’s looking for in his next team: “Looking for a great fit. A team that has a great QB. Looking for somewhere I will be comfortable.

This fits with recent reports over the past week or so, which is that the Seahawks wanted to get a better handle on their cap situation, but we’re ruling out the possibility of bringing Sherman back at a lower salary, depending on how things go in the coming days.

Sherman, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He is entering the final of his five-year, $58.789 million contract that includes $40 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2018 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Sherman will free up $11 million of available cap space while creating $2.2 million in dead money.

In 2017, Sherman appeared in nine games and recorded 35 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass defenses for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 33 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Sherman and the Seahawks as the news is available.
