Manish Mehta reports that the Jets are lining up contingency options in the event Bilal Powell signs with another team.
Mehta previously mentioned that the Powell is “leaning towards” signing with the Bills and reuniting with former HC Rex Ryan.
One contingency option for the Jets, according to Mehta, is Patriots free agent RB Shane Vereen.
Last we heard regarding Vereen, Jeff Howe reported that Vereen is targeting a contract that would pay him close to $3.5 million per year.
Vereen, 25, played out his four-year, $3,461,150 rookie contract that included $1,762,238 guaranteed and is now in position to be an unrestricted free agent.
In 2014, Vereen ran for 391 yards on 96 carries (4.1 YPC) to go along with 52 receptions for 447 yards receiving and five total touchdowns for the Patriots.
