Free agent DE Shawne Merriman announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday.
“After a lengthy discussion with my agent, family and team, I have officially decided to put in my retirement papers,” writes Merriman, via ShawneMerriman.com.
He added that he’s not retiring because he can no longer play, but instead wants to go out on his own terms and pursue otherย opportunities.
Merriman, 28, was taken No. 12 overall by the Chargers with a pick they acquired in the Eli Manning trade. He finishes his career as a three time Pro Bowler and tallied 45.5 sacks in eight season in the league.
