Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports Steelers OT Jerald Hawkins underwent surgery to repair a torn quad and will be placed on injured reserve.
Hawkins sustained the injury during Wednesday’s practice and could miss the entire 2018 season, so there appears to be little hope that he will be able to return off injured reserve later on.
Hawkins, 24, is a former fourth-round pick out of LSU by the Steelers in the 2016 NFL Draft. He is entering the second year of a four-year, $2.87 million rookie contract and is set to earn a base salary of $630,000 this season.
This marks the second time Hawkins has been placed on injured reserve after sustaining a shoulder injury his rookie year.
In 2017, Hawkins appeared in five games for the Steelers and appeared in 48 total snaps.
