Steelers Waive Fifth-Round Pick OL Wesley Johnson, Promote S Ross Ventrone

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially waived fifth-round pickย OL Wesley Johnson on Saturday and signedย S Ross Ventrone to their active roster.

Give thatย Steelers will beย withoutย S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring) for Week 6, this move is most likely them bolstering their safetyย depthย ahead of Sunday’s game against the Browns.

Johnson has yet to be active for Pittsburgh, so it would not be surprising to see him sign on to the Steelers’ practice squad next week.

Johnsonย started all 51 games he played in during his careerย at Vanderbilt. He lined up at numerous positions, although most of his starts came at left tackle. Johnsonย wasย named first-team All-SEC last year.

Ventrone, 28, hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2011 when he was playing for the Patriots.
