Jay Glazer reported on Fox Sports’ Thursday telecast (per Barry Jackson) that the Texans have spoken to 10 teams including the Dolphins about a potential trade for franchise DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney.
Last we heard regarding Clowney, Michael Lombardi reported the Texans are, in fact, shopping him in trade talks around the NFL.
Lombardi added that the Texans trade demands for Clowney “will be reasonable” and “won’t be hard to solve.” However, Lombardi noted the issue in trade talks with other teams will be the kind of money Clowney is looking for in a long-term deal.
- John McClain of the Houston Chronicle said previously that he would be surprised if Clowney was not traded.
- John Granato reported that Texans Clowney refused to sign a long-term contract with the Dolphins that resulted in Miami backing out of a potential trade with the Texans.
- Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, citing multiple league sources, reports that the Dolphins won’t be trading for Clowney and have no desire to pursue a deal for the franchise player.
Clowney has yet to sign his franchise tag worth $15.967 million and has skipped the offseason program and training camp so far. Clowney would have to sign his franchise tender in order to be traded, so this gives him some leverage in terms of where he could end up.
Texans HC Bill O’Brien said a few weeks ago that he still doesn’t know when Clowney will report to the team. Clowney has yet to sign his franchise tag, though there have been some reports he could sign and check-in with the Texans following the team’s third preseason game.
“I don’t know. I really don’t,” O’Brien said on NFL Network. “I know he’s working hard. He’s out there working out…he’s in shape. He’s doing everything he needs to do to be ready to play. But ultimately that’s up to him (when he reports). When he wants to show up, he’ll show up, and he’ll be ready to go. He’s a professional. When that happens, we’ll move forward with that. But I have no idea when he’ll be here. I can’t predict that.”
Clowney, 25, is a former No. 1 overall pick of the Texans back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $22.272 million contract when the Texans picked up his fifth-year option which paid him $12.306 million for 2018.
In 2018, Clowney appeared in 15 games for the Texans and recorded 47 tackles, 9 sacks, a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, one defensive touchdown and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 9 overall edge defender out of 103 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding Clowney as the news is available.
