Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Texans plan to move Romeo Crennel back to defensive coordinator now that the Titans have announced the hiring of Mike Vrabel.
Texans HC Bill O’Brien has already confirmed the news (per Mark Berman), saying: “Yeah, he was still really involved with the defense this past year. He just had other duties helping me. He won’t have as many of those duties. He’ll be back being the defensive coordinator and still have the assistant head coach title.”
Crennel, 70, began his NFL coaching career with the Giants back in 1981 as their special teams coach. He later took jobs with the Patriots, Jets and Brown before returning to New England in 2001 as their defensive coordinator.
After four seasons with the Patriots, Crennel was hired as the Browns’ head coach before he was fired four years later.
Crennel spent a few years with the Chiefs as their defensive coordinator and head coach before the Texans hired as their defensive coordinator in 2014. Houston made the decision to promote Vrabel last year and move Crennel to assistant head coach/defense.
