Texans Place WR DeAndre Hopkins On Reserve/Did Not Report List

The Houston Texans officially placed WR DeAndre Hopkins on the reserve/did not report list on Saturday.

This comes after the news that Hopkins did not show up for the start of training camp and is holding out for new contract.

Texans GM Rick Smith released the following statement regarding Hopkins‘ decision to hold out of training camp for a new contract.

“We are disappointed DeAndre has elected not to report to training camp with the rest of his teammates. He has expressed his position regarding his contract status, and we have been clear with both he and his representatives of ours. Our focus is on the 2016 season and all of our collective efforts and attention with be centered on that endeavor.”

Hopkins is now subject to fines of $40,000 for each day missed. Field Yates points out that Hopkins has a $445,000 roster bonus on August 4th if he is on 90-man roster. However, he wouldn’t receive this if he’s still on the reserve/did not report.

This could be a big issue for the Texans, as Hopkins has clearly earned a new contract and is already among the best receiver in the NFL.

The Texans picked up Hopkins’ fifth-year option back in April that will run them over $7.9 million in 2017. However, this is guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.

Hopkins has said previously that he would like to play his entire career for the Texans.

“If I can play my whole career here, I would,” Hopkins said, via the Houston Chronicle. “I love this place. This organization took a chance on drafting me. You have to look at that.”

Hopkins, 24, was taken with the No. 27 overall pick back in 2013. He was in the final year of his four-year, $7.64 million rookie contract and will make a base salary of $1 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Hopkins appeared in all 16 games for the Texans and recorded 111 receptions for 1,521 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 6 receiver out of 121 qualifying players.
