ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Texans RBย Arian Foster willย undergo groin surgery in Philadelphia on Friday.
- John McClain reports that Foster is expected to be placed onย short-term injured reserve, which will cost him at the least the first eightย games of the 2015 season.
Foster was reportedly seeking a second opinion regarding the extent of his injury, but the expectation has been that he was likely to undergo surgery.
Houston has already brought in free agents running backs such as Pierre Thomas,ย Ben Malena and Joe McKnightย for workouts. However, they were unable to reach an agreement with Thomas, despite optimism that he would be signed to a deal on Wednesday.
Other potential options that have been mentioned for the Texans at running back include:ย Chris Johnson,ย BenJarvus Green-Ellisย andย Jeff Demps.
Foster, 28, has another two years remaining on his five-year, $43.5 million contractย that includedย $20.75 million guaranteed.ย He stands to make base salaries of $6 million and $6.5 million over the final two years of the agreement.
In 2014, Foster appeared inย 13 games for the Texans and ran for 1,246 yards on 260 carries (4.8 YPC) to go along with 38 receptions for 327 yards receiving and 13 total touchdowns.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 12 running back out of 57 qualifying players.
