Texans Starting Matt Schaub In Week 16

Texans interim HC Wade Phillips announced that Matt Schaub will be their starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Broncos.

Case Keenum is out after he suffered a torn ligament in his thumb, so this move is not performance related.

Given that Schaub is firmly on the chopping block this offseason, this should at least give him one last opportunity to showcase ability to prospective teams. It’s hard to imagine anyone handing Schaub another starting job, but the value of a backup quarterback has increased in recent years, so he should find plenty of interest if the Texans do in fact cut him loose.

Schaub, 32, signed five-year contract worth $66.15 million and included $29.15 million guaranteed back in 2012. He has a base salary of $10 million coming his way in 2014 and the fact that he’s no longer the team’s starter is reason enough to part ways.
