Ian Rapoport reports that the Titans have informed Ryan Tannehill that he will be the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Chargers with Marcus Mariota heading to the bench.
Titans HC Mike Vrabel explained that he made the decision to sit Mariota during Sunday’s loss to the Broncos in an attempt to give their offense a spark and it appears as though they want to see what Tannehill can do with an extended opportunity.
Mariota’s play has regressed this year and with the team losing four of their past five games, it can’t hurt to see what Tannehill as their starter against a struggling Chargers team.
Tannehill, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2012. Miami traded Tannehill to the Titans this offseason for draft compensation.
Tannehill is currently in the third year of his six-year, $95.272 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $17.47 million and $18.725 million over the next two years of the agreement.
In 2019, Tannehill has appeared in two games for the Titans and completed 13 of 16 pass attempts for 144 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.
Mariota, 25, is a former No. 2 overall pick of the Titans back in 2015. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $24.214 million rookie contract thatโs fully guaranteed and is set to make a base salary of $2,636,270 to go along with another $3,736,905 next year.
The Titans picked up Mariota’s fifth-year option back in April worth $20.922 million for the 2019 season. He’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent next year.
In 2019, Mariota has appeared in six games and completed 59.1 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also rushed for 129 yards.
