The Redskins agreed to a trade with the Colts to move up and select Mississippi State DE Montez Sweat in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Here’s the trade breakdown:
Redskins
- Mississippi State DE Montez Sweat
Colts
- No. 46
- 2020 second-round pick
Sweat, 22, played two seasons at Mississippi State after transferring from Michigan State. Many draft analysts consider him to be a top-10 prospect in this year’s class.
Reports had said that Sweat has an enlarged heart that has created some concern from NFL teams and led at least some teams to remove him from their draft boards.
However, it appears as though this is not the consensus and did not greatly impact Sweat’s draft status as many assumed it would.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that NFL teams believe Sweat’s heart condition was misdiagnosed as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at the combine.
Two sources have told Rapoport that the thickness of Sweat’s heart wall is actually 1.5 cms, not nearly 2.0.
According to Rapoport, additional tests have indicated that there’s no risk with regards to Sweat’s heart moving forward.
Sweat wound up setting a Combine-record for defensive linemen, running the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds despite coming in at 6-foot-6, 260 pounds.
During his college career, Sweat appeared in 27 games and recorded 105 tackles, 23.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a recovery.
