Vikingsย CB Antoine Winfield has put together quite the season, despite the fact that he’s currentlyย 35-years-old. While his 2012 success has really helped a young Vikings team, it will also create a bit of an issue in regards to the team’s salary cap during the offseason.
Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press writes thatย Winfield’s contract included aย playing-time clause that will increase his 2013 salary from a reasonable $3 million toย $7.2 million next season.
According to Murphy, it’s unlikely that Minnesota will releaseย Winfield in the coming months, but there’s a distinct chance that he could be asked to renegotiate his contract.
“That’s really interesting. I really don’t know at the moment,” said Winfield in regards to possibly making a sacrificeย to stay with the team. “I’m sure we’ll be talking during the offseason. I understand it’s a business. But I will be playing football next year. Where? I don’t know yet.”
The Vikings could use some additional help at cornerback next season, but keepingย Winfield would provide not only leadership, but also some much needed depth that will help them matchup better against team’s like Packers as well as the likes of Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall.
