Broncos Defensive Coordinator Rumors

Update:

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that former Texans DC Wade Phillips is in Denver to interview with the Broncos for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

Phillips served as the Texan’s defense coordinator under Gary Kubiak, so it’s really not all that surprising to see them contact him regarding the position.

The only issue for the Broncos would be that Phillips runs a 3-4 defense, which could force them to change their personnel a bit.

Denver is reportedly hoping to have a resolution regarding whether or not Bengals DBs coach Vance Joseph will be allowed to interview for the job by the end of the week.

According to Jeff Legwold of ESPN, the Broncos have have continued their efforts to hire Bengals DBs coach Vance Joseph as the team’s new defensive coordinator in recent days, despite the fact that Cincinnati blocked him from taking the job.

Legwold mentions that ” there is a feeling within the Broncos’ front office that if the Bengals believe they can find a replacement on their defensive staff for Joseph, they would be more inclined to let Joseph take the promotion with the Broncos.”

Interestingly enough, former Giants DC Perry Fewell has reportedly surfaced as a candidate to replace Joseph on the Bengals’ coaching staff.

Legwold adds that Denver believes Fewell will remain in play for Cincinnati until he’s hired elsewhere.

It’s worth mentioning that Fewell interviewed with the 49ers this past week for their defensive backs coaching position.

The Broncos have also shown interest in former Texans DC Wade Phillips as well.

Gil Brandt mentions that it won’t be surprising to see the Broncos hire Wade Phillips as their next defensive coordinator given his ties to new HC Gary Kubiak.

Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports that the Broncos have contacted former Texans DC Wade Phillips about their defensive coordinator vacancy.

However, Legwold mentions that Denver has continued their efforts to hire Bengals DBs coach Vance Joseph as their defensive coordinator, even though Cincinnati has blocked him from taking the job.

Jeff Legwold reports that the Broncos are still hoping the Bengals change their minds and allow DBs coach Vance Joseph to take their defensive coordinator job.

According to Legwold, Denver is moving forward and doing work on other potential candidates for the position.

Bill Williamson of ESPN is “hearing” that former Texans DC Wade Phillips could be an option for the Broncos defensive coordinator position under Gary Kubiak.

As of now, Bengals DBs coach Vance Joseph appears to be the favorite to get the Broncos’ job, even though Cincinnati could block him from taking the job.

Phillips came up as a candidate for the Redskins defensive coordinator job, however, it became clear that Washington was focused on other candidates.

The Redskins officially announced that they’ve hired Joe Barry as their new defensive coordinator Tuesday night.

Houston parted ways with Phillips last year after they brought in Bill O’Brien as the new head coach. Phillips wound up sitting out the 2014 season, but he has had a good deal of success in the past as a defensive coordinator.

Although, Phillips has employed a 3-4 defense in the past, and Denver has used a 4-3 base defense in recent years.

We’ll have more updates regarding the Broncos’ defensive coordinator vacancy as the news is available.
