The Washington Football Team is “virtually certain” to move on from QB Dwayne Haskins in 2021, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
This comes after Hasking violated COVID-19 protocols and was subsequently fined $40,000 by the NFL. Washington also stripped his captaincy as a result.
La Canfora mentions Haskins had asked for a trade earlier in the season after he was benched in September. However, the trade market for Hasking was “limited-at-best” and La Canfora mentions that it could be even worse in 2021.
At this point, La Canfora says mosts teams expect Washington to simply release Haskins following his second season with the team.
Washington is forced to keep Haskins ready to play with Alex Smith dealing with a calf injury right now and the team still in position to win the NFC East. Even if Haskins is able to step in and look good for Washington, La Canfora doesn’t think it would be enough for him to save his job, as he reportedly has few advocates within the organization outside of senior vice president of player development Doug Williams.
Haskins, 23, was selected by Washington with the No. 14 overall pick out of Ohio State after many believed he would end up being a top-10 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He’s in the second year of his four-year, $14,416,600 rookie contract that included an $8,504,800 signing bonus.
Haskins’ contract includes a fifth-year option for Washington to pick up in 2022.
In 2020, Haskins has appeared in six games for Washington and completed 62.9 percent of his passes for 1,285 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions. He has also rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown.
We’ll have more on Haskins as the news is available.
