New England Patriots WR Wes Welker mentioned that heโs โprobably not going toโ attend the teamsโ mandatory minicamp in June.
โIโm thinking Iโm probably not going to, but things could change,โ Welker said, per Mike Reiss. โItโs really not a route I thought Iโd ever take, because itโs not me. I feel like itโs just kind of been the spot Iโve been put in.โ
Welker has already made the decision to sit out the Patriotsโ voluntary workouts that have begun recently. Considering his age, it would make sense for Welker to try to use what leverage he has left to secure a long-term contract with the Patโs. Thereโs obviously no guarantee that Bill Belichick and company will appease Welker in such a scenario, but it would make sense from his stand point.
Heโs previously said that he was willing to the 2012 season under the franchise tag, so thereโs still a chance that he could return for minicamp even with a new contract.
