Wes Welker “Probably Not Going To” Attend Patriots Minicamp

New England Patriots WR Wes Welker mentioned that he’s “probably not going to” attend the teams’ mandatory minicamp in June.

I’m thinking I’m probably not going to, but things could change,” Welker said, per Mike Reiss. “It’s really not a route I thought I’d ever take, because it’s not me. I feel like it’s just kind of been the spot I’ve been put in.”

Welker has already made the decision to sit out the Patriots’ voluntary workouts that have begun recently. Considering his age, it would make sense for Welker to try to use what leverage he has left to secure a long-term contract with the Pat’s. There’s obviously no guarantee that Bill Belichick and company will appease Welker in such a scenario, but it would make sense from his stand point.

He’s previously said that he was willing to the 2012 season under the franchise tag, so there’s still a chance that he could return for minicamp even with a new contract.
